Quality horses in action at Fairview

- Punters’ Pal

SOME of the Eastern Cape’s best race horses will be in action today at the Fairview track.

It is a meeting packed with quality, with the main race the East Cape Oaks for three-year-old fillies.

As expected, there are some capable challengers from Cape Town in the race.

Esteemal has good Cape Town form which makes her a huge contender and Woodstock Fairy can also not be left out of the selections for the Pick Six and Jackpot.

The fillies that will carry the hopes of the Eastern Cape are Queen Forever and Widow’s Lamp.

It is certainly a race to look forward to.

There will also be huge interest in the battle of the sprinters in the Fairview Flying Five. Yet again there is a Cape Town raider to add spice to the event.

Phelan Lucky looks ready for a big run and the local pack, led by the ultra-consistent Juan Two Three, will have to be at their best to keep the prize money at home.

That is not where the excitement stops because punters must keep an eye on a Pinnacle Stakes for fillies and mares where Star Burst Galaxy will be looking for her third win in a row, as well as the Derby Plate for three-year-olds.

The WSB East Cape Derby will be contested on Saturday May 12, one of the biggest race days of the year at Fairview.

Hopefully for the East Cape, today’s Plate will show there are some lively contenders to win the Derby as a local horse last won it back in 2009. The Cape Town raiders have dominated this race since then.

Last Friday saw the running of the second leg in the WSB East Cape Poly Challenge. Breakfast Club won the race, followed by Sao Paulo and the winner of the first leg, Cape Rebel.

This result sets it up for a very exciting third and final leg with the trio the main players. Cape Rebel is well placed to earn a bonus of R50 000 for the best-performing horse over the three legs but Sao Paulo is also in the running.
