Close shaves mark second EP stint

-

ROUND Two of the EP Regional Circuit Racing Championships at Aldo Scribante Racetrack delivered some exciting racing last Saturday.

The motorcycle heats saw Rickie Otto making his 600cc race debut at the circuit.

Otto is one of the youngest competitors in the National 600cc Motorcycle Championships this year, and Bay spectators were treated to a thrilling duel between him and Kevin Redman.

The two traded positions in both heats, with Redman taking the win at the end of the day.

It was close racing though, as there was only a 0.3 second gap between the two riders on their total race time for the day.

The other motorcycle classes were well-supported as well, with Pierre le Roux from East London taking the win in Masters A from a hard-charging Bert Jonker and Jaco Scholtz securing the Unlimited class.

In the Motorcycle B Race heats, Zanté Otto, on a Kawasaki 250cc, gave the others some lessons on overtaking.

Bernard Els was victorious in the Breakfast Run Class, Mac Burrows in the Historic Class, Jan Dorfling in Masters B and Ray Wood in the 400cc class. Paul Jansen had the ride of his life in the 650cc class.

Round Two of the Modified Saloons was also held, with the day’s racing consisting of two heats with 10 laps each.

The Modified Saloons saw fast and furious racing from the huge field of cars.

In race one, the two Audis driven by Nick Davidson and Celso Scribante led the field from the start, followed by Deon Slabbert, Kevin Kelly, Ian Riddle and Thys Geyser.

The race was fierce in front and further back with Kelly, Riddle, Slabbert and Geyser fighting it out for third place. This carried on until lap seven, when the two Audis of Davidson and Scribante touched at the end of the main straight, with Scribante going off and hitting the tyre wall.

The red flag came out and the rest of the cars lined up on the grid until the track was cleared and restarted for a three-lap dash for the flag.

In the end Davidson was the winner, with Slabbert second.

Race two saw Davidson run up front with Kelly, Slabbert, Riddle and Geyser at it again with very close racing. Davidson was again the winner, followed by Kelly and Slabbert.

The Historic car category had a limited field of only eight cars, which made for a very spread out race, but Mark Schulpfort pulled out all the stops to beat Tom Flynn overall in class D.

Loren Sampson and Shaun Rudolph in class C, finished a credible second and third respectively.
