Seconds between top two in ultra marathon

THERE was a close finish in the 41st running of the Bruintjies­hoogte 50km Ultra Marathon, which started and ended at Gill Primary School in Somerset East on Saturday.

Charles Ndlumbini (Vukani) was the overall winner in 3:12:01, with Charles Segalo (Charlo, 3:12:48) beaten into second and Sandile Ngunuza (Nedbank) in third.

Stephanie Smith (Born To Run) was an easy winner in the women’s category.

The EPA event also included a 25km, 15km and 5km run.

The ultra was an EPA Prestige League event and carried full points, the 25km race carried full points and the 15km race was a one-pointer.

Andre Ketchem (X-Cel) was the overall winner of the 25km in 1:24:39, with George Ntshiliza second and Xavier Adams third.

Christene Claasen (Achilles) won the women’s category in 1:56:28.

Devernito du Plessis (Albany) finished first in the 15km in 55:25. He was followed home by Andre Prins and Lesley Koesba.

Madibaz athlete Kaylin Beach won the women’s category.

Senior women: Christene Claasen (Achilles) 1:56:28, Anche Schubart (Achilles) 2:08:01, Claire McCann (Rhodes University) 12:10:04. Junior men: Malan Ferreira (Temp) 2:22:40. Junior women: Kayla Barnard (Temp) 2:54:14. 15km Senior men: Devernito du Plessis (Albany) 55:25, Andre Prins (Temp) 56:19, Lesley Koesba (Nedbank) 57:16. Senior women: Kaylin Beach (Madibaz), 1:17:35, Julita Puren (Somerset East) 1:19:46, Marcia Schulpfort (Somerset East)1:25:33.
