Collegiate give Rhenish stick
HOCKEY was the major winner for Collegiate when they tackled Stellenbosch rivals Rhenish in the Western Cape at the weekend.
The only team to lose were the U16Bs, who went down 2-1 on the Friday evening.
The trend of tight matches continued on Saturday as all the games on the main field, barring a 3-1 win for Collegiate U14A, were decided by a single goal.
Both the U16A and first team games were thrilling encounters.
The U16As led 2-0 at half time before Rhenish mounted a strong comeback to make it 2-2.
With four minutes left, Gemma Phillips struck the winner after a deflected shot at goal landed at her feet.
The first team game started at a terrific pace, with Collegiate taking a 1-0 lead after a fifth-minute strike by Shelby Sofianos. They doubled their lead shortly afterwards, thanks to some brilliant play down the left flank which saw Caitlin van Goeverden tap home amid a goalmouth scramble.
After the visitors missed some more scoring chances, Rhenish pulled one back from a penalty corner, before Taz Preller restored the two-goal advantage.
The second half was a real arm wrestle as both sides missed chances.
Rhenish did score from another penalty corner to make it 3-2, but Collegiate held on for the win.
Unfortunately for Collegiate, they did not fare so well at netball and tennis.
The netball first team went down 31-19 and the tennis girls managed to win only nine games out of a possible 64.
