Call management to account

-

THE Igazi Foundation would like to register its disappointment at the decision by the Department of Health to reprimand two caring health professionals.

The two nursing sisters have been serving the community for many years as members of the medical staff at the Igazi Haematology Ward on the 7th floor at Provincial Hospital.

As has been testified by all who have received treatment at the facility, the staff are professional, caring and dedicated.

Previous correspondents, most recently Eric Pike, former bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Port Elizabeth, have lauded the staff for the manner in which they treat their patients.

The two nursing sisters are members of this caring team.

It is a shame that their concern for the welfare of their patients and our community has led to their being disciplined.

The Igazi Foundation wishes to extend its support to the nursing sisters concerned and to applaud them for their service to our communities.

We would urge that those responsible for allowing the facilities to fall into such disrepair should instead be called to account.

Surely the management of the hospital should explain to the community why this state of affairs developed and what steps they took to obviate the immense discomfort that the community had to endure.

What, if anything, did they do to provide alternatives to the non-functioning of the lifts, ensuring that patients could access treatment? Did they respond to complaints from the unit head? Why did it take so long for the problem to be addressed?

The Igazi Foundation expresses its appreciation to the community for the response to our call for assistance. Once again, the community of Port Elizabeth has responded positively to our call for volunteers to assist.

We must also appreciate the local print media, as well as Algoa FM, for highlighting this challenge. Your coverage has prompted the Department of Health into action.

The Igazi Foundation appreciates your continued support and will continue to strive after improved haematological services for all. Our blood, our future!

MMA Leonard, chairman, Igazi Foundation
