The Provincial Hospital was a well-run hospital with a good, clean nurses home and top-class maternity section 25 years ago. It has now degenerated into a rundown main building and a rat-infested, tumble-down, disgraceful ex-nurses home plus a non-existent maternity home etc, where dedicated medical staff try their very best ! The Eastern Cape Department of Health, especially the chief executive, should get written warnings or, even better, be shown the door! WS

In my view, there are horses for courses and it is not what one does in the subjective sense of things – a seemingly white thing, but how it is done a seemingly black thing – and when balance or peace is found, there can be a winner with glory and honour. One must expose that which undermines congruency and build on that which has unity for the common good. See how well the All Blacks have put it together. Breathing space is for inspiration and development and a new level of understanding. As to who is fooling who, at the end of the day the fire will expose that which is obviously lacking. In rugby, strength, speed and skill are fundamental to basics but attitude develops character, which has a lasting impact. Too much grumbling, complaining and ego involved, and also money, which can corrupt it all. We don’t live in a perfect world – and sport is not the beginning and end to lasting peace, but a space. SC

He took up arms against those who took up arms against Hitler. His partner-in-crime, Hendrik Verwoerd, architect of “grand apartheid”, also borrowed elements from Nazi doctrine – racism (the false belief that non-whites are inferior), homophobia, anti-Roman Catholic, anti-Semitic, anti-English, in particular the English press, which they went all out to silence.
