Jordaan lays complaint over rape claims
SOUTH African soccer boss and former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Danny Jordaan has lodged a defamation complaint with the police against his rape accuser, Jennifer Ferguson, and Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza.
Ferguson, who made her rape allegation against Jordaan public in October, acknowledged the counter-complaint against her yesterday.
Jordaan, who has accused the Orlando Pirates boss of assisting Ferguson by paying for her flights to South Africa and accommodation through a third party, laid the separate complaints against Khoza and Ferguson in Johannesburg on Friday.
In a brief conversation with a terse Ferguson yesterday, the singer and former ANC MP said she was aware of the defamation complaint laid against her.
“I am aware of the case, but I have no comment.
“I have no comment at this time,” she said.
She said she would issue a formal response in two days’ time.
Sweden-based Ferguson had said previously that her travel to South Africa had been funded by an anonymous donor.
Ferguson, who has accused Jordaan of raping her in a Port Elizabeth hotel 25 years ago, formalised the allegation when she laid a rape complaint against him at the Parkview police station in Johannesburg last month.
Attempts to secure comment from Jordaan yesterday were unsuccessful.
In a twist to the rape saga, which came to light during the emergence of the international #MeToo campaign, when women began to share their sexual assault stories on social media following the Harvey Weinstein scandal, Jordaan has now claimed that Khoza was the catalyst in the rape case opened against him.
Jordaan, according to the Sunday Times, said Khoza had paid for Ferguson’s flights and accommodation through a third party.
He said he had opened a case of defamation, criminal collusion and conspiracy – but refused to give details .
“I can’t talk about the substance and details,” he said. “Police must investigate it and get to the bottom of it.”
Khoza could not be reached for comment.
Jordaan has previously said Ferguson’s claims were unfounded.
Ferguson told the Sunday Times at the weekend that Jordaan had “made a wrong move”.
“The war has begun. Let’s hope that truth shall triumph and the good shall win,” she said.
