ANC to cut criminals from candidates’ list
“NO ONE with a criminal record will make it into the ANC’s nomination list,” the party said yesterday.
ANC provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi said this rule will be followed to the letter when the party starts its nomination processes at branch level from next month.
“We want credible leaders with no questionable characters, not people with criminal records,” he said.
This, as the party crafts its roadmap towards next year’s national and provincial elections. A nine-member team responsible for sifting through the candidates’ lists has been elected.
The announcement comes as the party’s auditors are busy verifying party membership across the province, to determine who qualifies to take part in branch general meetings which will nominate candidates for the legislature and National Assembly.
Ngcukayitobi said the party would also exclude anyone who had been subjected to the party’s disciplinary process and found guilty of wrongdoing.
Once branch general meetings were wrapped up, a provincial list conference where the pool of names would be discussed and reconciled, would be held in August. That is before the party can start its elections campaign in earnest.
“We are very committed to ensure that in this province, the ANC garners more support than the last election.
“That process starts with having a credible list of candidates for both the Bhisho legislature and those to national,” Ngcukayitobi said.
