Stars strike gold again in women’s league at Dower

- Vuyokazi Nkanjeni

GOLDEN Stars clinched their second consecutive victory in the Sasol Women’s League when they beat Amanqilo Birds 3-2 at Dower Campus at the weekend.

Stars, who were trailing 2-1 in the second half, stole two late goals 10 minutes before the final whistle.

The win saw the Port Elizabeth soccer side maintain their unbeaten run after three matches.

Coach Robyn Benjamin said she was thrilled with her team’s results.

“We have been unbeaten in three games now. The Red Roses game was a draw, Manchester Babes was a 4-3 win and this weekend we won again by a 3-2 margin,” Benjamin said.

“This is an improvement from where we started off and we will get to where we want to be.

“Every week there is a little bit of improvement from the women, especially with Saturday’s game.

“We were behind 2-1 in the second half but then we scored two late goals and won. This was a great team effort.”

Stars are 12th on the log with seven points from seven games.

Meanwhile, Uitenhage side Babes bagged their first win of the season when they beat Eluhewini Ladies 2-0 at home.

The win also saw the team bounce back from their 4-3 defeat against Stars in their previous league fixture. After a convincing 3-0 win over seventh placed Eastern Cape Rangers, Sophakama Ladies failed to keep the momentum going when they lost 3-1 to City Lads.

The match was never going to be an easy one for the Zwide side against log-leader Lads, who have been dominating for weeks in the league.

The win saw Lads extend their unbeaten run to eight games in the league.

The results were: Bashee Eagles 5 University of Fort Hare 3, City Lads 3 Sophakama Ladies 1, Golden Stars 3 Amanqilo Birds 2, Birmingham City 0 Thunderbirds Ladies 2, Cumakala 1 Red Roses Ladies 1, Eastern Rangers 4 Ayakha Stars Ladies 3, Eluhewini Ladies 0 Manchester Babes 2, Executive Ladies 7 Highbury 2
