Lack of trust, ethics focus at leadership seminar
A TRUST deficit in society and a lack of ethical behaviour are just two of the topics that will be explored by Discovery franchise director Kate Moodley at the upcoming Nelson Mandela Bay Leadership Summit.
“Leadership is relevant in all areas of society. Good leaders, whether in the private, public or community sectors, are required to make those areas function properly,” she said.
Moodley obtained her master’s in law before moving into the financial services industry and insurance.
She was a legal adviser at Old Mutual in 2003, and then moved into the role of business development manager at Momentum in 2005.
She said research showed that authentic leadership based on trust and ethics enhanced performance.
She believes new leadership styles for the future will constitute stronger forms of acts of selflessness, patriotic duty and putting the needs of others above individual needs.
South African research authority in banking systems and financial markets Professor Vivienne Lawack, the academic deputy vice-chancellor at the University of the Western Cape, is another speaker.
Lawack will explore her own experiences, challenges and strategies around change and the ever-evolving landscape of South Africa’s higher education sector to distil lessons for the private and public sector on leadership during turbulent times.
“Since 2015, leading in higher education became very demanding as a result of the #FeesMustFall disruptions.
“Technology, political and socioeconomic changes, needs of employers along with employability and employment has required leaders to adopt resilient leadership styles.”
Lawack, the former executive dean at the NMU faculty of law, said resilient leadership ensured quick recovery from setbacks, maintaining positive outlooks, and sensing and seeing opportunities in troubled times.
The summit’s theme is “Leadership on the edge: Hope or despair? Lessons in responsible leadership”.
Other speakers include economist Dr Thabi Leoka, Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber chief executive Nomkhita Mona, retired Constitutional Court justice Johann Kriegler and Kagiso Trust founding member the Rev Frank Chikane.
The summit, in partnership with The Herald, will take place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth, on June 27 from 8am.
