City Lads still top of game in women’s league

LEADING Sasol Women’s League side City Lads remain unbeaten this season, having recorded their ninth consecutiv­e victory at the weekend.

The New Brighton team beat Ayakha Stars Ladies 4-1 at Mthatha Sport Fields to cement their spot at the top of the log.

They have a full house of 27 points from nine matches but second-placed Thunderbir­ds Ladies trail by only three points.

Ahead of the Stars encounter, Lads coach Terry Mrwerwe told the MySafa website that her players had the ability to punish their opponents whenever given the opportunit­y.

“We get strong commitment from our players and they work very hard both on and off the pitch,” Mrwerwe said.

“We hope to put in even more effort and learn from each game we play.”

A close 3-2 win against Bashee Eagles saw Zwide side Sophakama Ladies bounce back from their 3-1 loss to Lads previously.

The win saw Sophakama move to ninth place in the standings with 12 points from nine games.

Meanwhile, Golden Stars’ three-match unbeaten run came to a stop at the weekend, when they lost 2-0 to Eluhewini Ladies at Dower Campus.

The win ended Eluhewini’s six-match winless spell in the league.

Manchester Babes, who bagged their first league win last weekend, held Cumakala to a 2-2 stalemate.
