MIXED BAG FOR PEARSON

Tough contests against DSG and St Andrew’s at the weekend

PEARSON High enjoyed a number of exciting contests when they hosted Grahamstown rivals St Andrew’s College and DSG in a range of sports this weekend. On the netball court, it was Pearson who completely dominated proceedings against DSG, while St Andrew’s College had the better in the rugby encounters.

The hockey was evenly contested, with St Andrew’s and DSG taking the honours at the senior levels and Pearson doing better in the younger age-groups.

NETBALL

THE Pearson first team delivered a flawless display to run out 59-17 winners against DSG in Grahamstown.

Coach Reg Sharp described it as Pearson’s best game of the season.

Goal-shooter Demi de Jager was on song, sinking basket after basket from anywhere in the goal circle.

Goalkeeper Siya Dingiswayo was a colossus on defence and turned over ball after ball. The player of the match award was shared by these two.

HOCKEY

IN a game of high quality from both teams, DSG took advantage of some early pressure to score a goal in the first quarter, setting up their 1-0 win.

Pearson initially struggled to handle the situation, but gradually they began to shift the momentum as the game wore on.

In the second half, the fitness levels of the Pearson team came to the fore and, for the most part, DSG were on the defensive.

However, the visitors kept Pearson at bay with solid defence, and the match ended 1-0 in their favour.

Pearson’s Kyra Jurgens achieved the milestone of playing her 100th match for the first team.

ý The Pearson boys’ team faced a well-organised St Andrew’s outfit, who made all the plays from the outset.

At times, Pearson were able to break on the counter, but they never seriously threatened their opponents’ circle.

St Andrew’s, on the other hand, made the most of their possession and territory to score relatively frequently, running out comfortable 6-0 winners.

RUGBY

THE Pearson first team put up a gutsy performance against St Andrew’s and held their more fancied opponents to a six-point lead in the first half.

St Andrews, however, controlled much of the play on the day, dominating in most aspects of the game.

The visitors’ class eventually won through in the second half, and they started to exert increasing pressure on Pearson.

Converting their opportunities into points every chance they had, they ended up winning 38-6.
