School honours swimmer
TOP DSG swimmer Toni Rafferty was recognised for her achievements in the pool when she was re-awarded her honours at the Grahamstown school’s summer awards function.
Rafferty epitomises the school’s sports policy of developing resilience, determination and the ability to deal with disappointment.
It also encourages diligence and perseverance, attributes Rafferty has shown while setting an example of true sportsmanship.
Last year she was awarded honours by qualifying for the South Africa nationals. When a serious illness laid her low midway through the current season, her training was affected and the chance of again qualifying for nationals seemed to be out of the question.
Rafferty, however, never stopped believing in herself. Once back to health, she put in an enormous amount of work and recorded qualifying times for the nationals.
She also set new Eastern Province 50m and 100m freestyle records for her age-group.
At the nationals in April, she came ninth in the open 50m freestyle.
