Will support public awareness drive

- B Jefferies, St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth

I AGREE fully with Tony Bastos’s letter suggesting ways to clean up the city (“How city could deal with its big problem of increased littering”, June 7).

As a media owner, I would support the advertising drive for public awareness and am certain other media owners would join too.

A concerted campaign would not only discourage illegal dumping, but would embolden others to speak out against the litterers.

In addition I believe the municipality should investigate the possibility of changing the necessary laws that would compel the cellphone companies to terminate the lines of telephone numbers that are used on posters that have been illegally pasted on public property.

This would have the immediate effect of nullifying the transgressors’ efforts of obtaining business through this illegal activity.

Whether it is practical or not, I do not know, but fingerprinting illegally discarded rubbish – I am thinking of bottles thrown out of the windows of cars – would potentially be a way of determining who the transgressors are.
