Drivers don’t consider the folk on road

- Brian Chapman, Walmer Heights, Port Elizabeth

I’VE finally run out of patience with (some of) the motorists in Port Elizabeth, those I consider to be wholly inconsiderate!

My wife and I, both senior citizens, do a lengthy walk around Walmer Heights-Builders Warehouse area at least three times a week.

The behaviour of many of the passing motorists leaves a lot to be desired in that, more often than not, no effort is made to allow leeway to us while walking on the edge of the tar road.

We walk on the tar road mainly for comfort sake, as the grass verges are not level, and cause chaos with our legs and knees (especially to me after some 30+ years of playing rugby!).

Only the other day, going down Titian Road, I had to raise my left arm to shoulder height to prevent striking the rear-view mirror of a very close passing car!

Added to this, I had to take evasive action when a motorist cut a corner and I had to jump to safety, in the process ricking my knee! The reverse is also applicable. My wife and I both acknowledge those motorists who give way to us while walking and this is usually reciprocated by the motorist.

However, when we are in our car and give way to a jogger or walker, nine times out of 10 there is absolutely no acknowledgement whatsoever! Where is the empathy? Do we live in a vacuum? Never mind the cyclists, what about the walkers and joggers?
