AB quits while still in top cricketing form

- Tony Wadsworth, Port Elizabeth

THERE was no way that I could ignore a comment or chirp on AB de Villiers’s retirement from international cricket. I am a cricket nut! I have played cricket since I was five, maybe earlier and I still wish I could play just one more game.

I don’t care at what level, but I would like to play it with some of my best (and still) friends and ex-cricket team members!

I think this is how most ex-cricketers feel, but not De Villiers! He is different.

He is world class, a special talent, one who transformed batting and fielding into what we see and admire today!

But he doesn’t want to play at the highest level anymore, not at international level for South Africa. Why?

He says he is tired, has run out of gas.

He says he has no plans to play overseas. I wonder if this will remain to be the case?

What will De Villiers achieve if he plays for the Titans and scores hundreds?

Will this be an achievement after what De Villiers has already achieved?

Is there any other cricketer who has retired when he was still at his prime and had several more years left in him?

What was De Villiers’s real reason to quit now?

Being away from his family could have been managed with sensible compromises from both sides.

I don’t think this is the only reason, but anyway, thank you AB for the pleasure you have given us.

Maybe we will see you playing again somewhere some time.
