Razor-sharp funnyman in Bay

- Katvis22@gmail.com

FANS of Afrikaans comedy can enjoy an evening with Schalk Bezuidenhout when he performs in his one-man show, Voksbesit, at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre at 8pm on Friday.

Earlier in the evening, Bezuidenhout and his producer and co-author, Erns Grundling, will also launch their book, Truitjie Roer My Nie, at Bargain Books at Baywest Mall at 6pm.

The bilingual Bezuidenhout will be in the Bay ahead of several appearances at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown next week, where he will take part in Jersey Boy and Broken English.

His solo show, Jersey Boy, is so named for his penchant for wearing wacky jerseys, while he performs alongside fellow comedian Loyiso Madinga in Broken English, riffing in song and dance and breathing fire on life in South Africa.

Since this Kempton Park comic opened for Trevor Noah in 2015 and again in 2017, he has had his own solo show broadcast on Comedy Central and is a familiar face on television adverts.

He has also won two Comics Choice awards, as well as a coveted Safta.

Nowadays, Bezuidenhout is a well-known face on television, especially in the role of the adorable Danny in the kykNET series, Hotel, and as anchor of the satirical news programme, Die Ware Naarheid met Schalk Bezuidenhout, also on kykNET.

He has already toured nationwide with Voksbesit at festivals like the Stellenbosch Woordfees, KKNK, Free State Arts Festival, Innibos and Aardklop. In October last year, he also recorded a live DVD of Voksbesit at Evita se Perron in Darling.

Grundling said Port Elizabeth fans could look forward to Schalk “at his very best, with razor-sharp observational comedy and social commentary about life and living in South Africa”.

The show has an age restriction of no children under 14. Tickets are R120 and are on sale at Computicket.
