Honours even in derby

-

DSG hosted Kingswood in girls’ netball, squash and hockey fixtures this past week as this longstanding interschools sports fixture took place in Grahamstown.

The derby got under way last Monday with a squash fixture.

The encounter had a pulsating climax, with Kingswood coming from behind to win 14-11.

The netball matches took place on Friday.

While DSG won most of the 30 matches, Kingswood won the first team clash.

The match, played in front of 2 000 spectators, was well balanced after the first quarter.

But Kingswood surged ahead in the second quarter with Tilabo Williamson, Erin Meikle and Tami Labuschagne making the most of their scoring opportunities.

DSG fought back early in the third quarter with four unanswered goals as Tamara Jack and Sarah Stevenson found their shooting range, combined with stalwart defending from Babalwa Kleyi and Tyla Rose.

However, Kingswood regained control with a run of goals late in the quarter to effectively take the game beyond DSG’s reach.

The final quarter saw Kingswood take it 32-23.

On Saturday, the focus was on hockey and again DSG won most of the 21 matches played.

In the first game, an attack on the left flank saw Ciana Daniels pounce on a loose ball in the circle to make it 1-0 to Kingswood.

After the break, DSG bounced back strongly with some sustained pressure of their own, resulting in a goal from Nicky Ralston following a penalty corner.

For the rest of the game the teams traded penalty corners and goal shots, but both defences stood firm.

Diana Dixie, Teagan Thompson and Jenny du Toit were immense at the back for DSG, while Kingswood keeper Lushana van Heerden made fine saves to keep the scores level at 1-1.
