Four ECX Dragons weightlifters claimed gold medals at the Eastern Cape Weightlifting Championships held at the weekend.

Taking advantage of home ground at the ECX Gym in Sardinia Bay Road, Anthony Janse van Rensburg, 11, Luane Viljoen, 12, Jayden Pretorius and Michael Combrink, both 16, achieved gold medals in their respective divisions in addition to three champion of champions trophies.

Anthony claimed gold in the U14 for his lifts which included a 45kg clean and jerk, before a 35kg snatch saw him secure top spot on the podium.

He also won the U14 champion of champions trophy in the U62kg class.

“This is my second competition and winning this medal makes me so proud,” he said.

Luane took gold after excellent lifts of 61kg (clean and jerk) and a 46kg snatch – enough to take first place.

She also won the U14 champion of champions trophy in the U53kg class.

“I was also excited at setting personal bests at both my lifts,” Luane said.

Michael, who won a gold medal at the Arnold Classic Africa recently, claimed another gold with a 65kg clean and jerk, and a 55kg snatch.

No stranger to winning gold medals, Jayden put on another lifting exhibition to take gold with massive lifts of 125kg clean and jerk before achieving a 104kg snatch to take the win.

Lifting in the U69kg class, Jayden also took home the champion of champions trophy for youth and junior lifters.
