Young Cosmos hang tough to take league title

- Mogan Segadavan segadavanm@tisoblackstar.co.za

IN a thrilling finale, Young Cosmos were crowned the Wafa Premier League champions by two points at the Walmer High School field on Sunday.

The champions and their nearest challengers, Ghetto United, drew 2-2 in the final match of the day after both teams won their respective matches the previous day.

Cosmos beat Mabayibone Strikers 2-1, while Ghetto beat Peace United 2-0.

A win would have seen Ghetto pip Cosmos at the post.

To add to Ghetto’s woes, Golden Heroes thrashed Airport Valley United 14-1 to beat them on goal difference for the runners-up berth.

Heroes beat Morning Stars 2-1 in their second match.

Peace United, who thrashed Eleven Experience 11-1 in their second match, can finish no better than fourth when they play their catch-up match this weekend.

The six teams at the bottom of the log will also play their catch-up fixtures this weekend.

Even maximum points will not help tail-enders Airport Valley escape the big drop.

Who will join them hangs in the balance. Four teams are tied on 11 points and any one of them could be overtaken by Mabayibone, who are two points behind.
