Let’s try not to validate our arguments by quoting Bible
I read with interest W van Niekerk’s letter (“Don’t misinterpret the Bible”, July 6) responding to some observations made by councillor Lance Grootbom regarding the Biblical interpretation of homosexuality (“ACDP councillor flies anti-gay flag”, July 4).
I have no problem with accepted Christian values such as forgiveness, tolerance and family values, although it must be said that these values are also found in virtually every modern religious credo.
What I have a problem with is that the only accepted reference work in support of these values is the Bible (as amended by King James).
Whether by design or accident, this reference work is useful to all parties as it is ambiguous enough to find a home for every shade and opinion.
We know that huge chunks of this work are basically untrue, but it continues to be used as a valid reference.
After all, in religious terms, it’s only in recent history that the Catholic Church acknowledged that the sun was the centre of the universe and not the Earth.
So by all means, let’s continue a healthy debate on the morals or otherwise of major issues, but let’s not try to validate our arguments by quoting sources which completely lack credibility.

Lance Grootboom, you are 100% right! The Bible is very clear about homosexuality and even bestiality.
Not to argue with those who misunderstand and consequently misinterpret, the Holy Book also warns us "not to give pearls to pigs" (spiritually dead)! Maranatha!
