Grey High’s three-try burst sparks win over Framesby
A red card in the 47th minute was the catalyst for Grey High to produce arguably their best period of rugby this season, propelling them to a highly impressive 39-13 win over Framesby in their schools encounter at Grey on Saturday.
The home team, who led 10-6 at halftime, produced a stunning burst of three tries in seven minutes late in the game to bury their opponents as they set up a lead of 39-6.
Framesby replied with a converted try by flank Ruan du Preez in the final minute of the game. Grey were reduced to 14 men for the final 23 minutes when lock Dumisa Ngcivana, who had earlier received a yellow card following a physical confrontation, was given a second yellow after he threw the ball away when Framesby were awarded a penalty close to the home team’s line.
That resulted in the red card being produced, but the Grey outfit then added 22 points in double-quick time.
Centre Liyema Matyolweni crossed for his second try in the 40th minute to make it 17-6 and flyhalf Matthew Easton kicked his second penalty in the 54th minute.
Four minutes later an interception by Easton saw him go over to extend the lead and then a rampant Grey team scored further tries through No 8 Theo Repinz and Matyolweni.
For Grey, Easton kicked two penalties and four conversions, while Framesby flyhalf Juandre Liebenberg slotted two penalties and a conversion.
BRANDWAG v DESPATCH
Brandwag scored five tries for a decisive 29-13 victory over Despatch High School in Uitenhage on Saturday.
A gruelling 18 minutes passed before Brandwag eighth man, Ryben Dupond, found a hole on the fringe for the first try. Ten minutes later, centre Terrence Goliath sliced through the midfield. Wing Octavian Muller took the pass and scored. Brandwag led 12-6 lead at the break.
Wing Ferdi Effenaar and lock Gideon Serfontein each scored a breakaway try in the same corner after halftime and the home team’s lead had stretched to 24-6.
In the last minutes, Despatch replacement Lawandre Samuels finally scored his side’s only try. When the final hooter had sounded, Brandwag replacement, Justin Niemand, ran the length of the field after the ball spilt into his hands, to score his side’s fifth try.
Fullback Dano Swart converted two of Brandwag’s tries.
