Robbery caught on video

Video footage of what appears to be an attempted hijacking or robbery at a traffic circle in New Brighton has emerged.

The incident came to light after a 33-second CCTV video clip of the attack emerged at about midday on Tuesday.

The incident took place at about 9.30am on Monday near Brighton Square.

It happened at the intersection of Ferguson Road and Sheya Kulati Drive.

Police confirmed yesterday they had been informed of the incident, but as no case had been opened an investigation had not yet begun.

The footage shows three men approach a white bakkie from different directions as it slows at the traffic circle.

As the car stops, a man runs up to the driver’s side and opens the door, as the vehicle is about to drive off.

The driver slams on the brakes as the attackers lean into the truck.

At the same time, another attacker jumps in front of the vehicle as it stops.

The bakkie driver is seen fighting with the attacker before jumping out and running away.

One of the attackers gives chase, while the other two ransack the truck – standing abandoned at the traffic circle.

Cars drive past as an attacker grabs items from the vehicle, slams the door and runs away.

It is unclear whether the driver of the truck ran away with the keys, forcing the men to flee on foot.

The driver returned minutes later and drove off again.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said police were alerted to the incident only on Tuesday.
