It’s a High School Musical!
● Westering to put on ‘West Side Story’ at the Savoy
Westering High School is presenting the musical West Side Story, directed by Akhona Nkumanda and choreographed by Kehly Windvogel.
The cast of 55 is made up of Westering pupils and every staff member at the school is also involved in the production behind the scenes.
West Side Story is an awardwinning 1957 Broadway musical inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet.
The music is by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and it was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins.
The story is set in the Upper West Side neighbourhood of New York City in the mid1950s.
The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.
The situation becomes complicated when gang member Tony falls in love with a rival's sister, Maria.
West Side Story features iconic music from Bernstein, including Maria, America, Somewhere, Tonight and I Feel Pretty.
In 1961 it was made into a film, which also received critical acclaim.
The production will run from Wednesday to Saturday August 1 to 4 at the Savoy Theatre in Adcockvale, with shows nightly at 7pm. There is also a matinee at 2pm on Saturday.
A school spokesperson said the show would provide fine entertainment for young and old alike.
“Our pupils are working very hard – they are dancing, acting and singing their hearts out to get this show ready.”
Tickets for the shows are available at the school in Papenkuils Street at R60 per adult and R30 per pupil, student or pensioner.
