Highbury were the biggest winners in the Sasol Women’s League, beating Eluhewini Ladies 5-2 at Bridgemeade Sports Field at the weekend.

Highbury have struggled to find their feet in the league, having lost 11 of the 14 matches they have played so far.

The weekend’s win was just their third victory in the league.

Coach Mzwanele Faas said the win was a team effort.

“We scored most of the goals in the first half. In our previous games, we did not take our chances in the first half but now we have corrected that,” the coach said.

“Also, we defended well in the second half because our opponents were also putting pressure on us.

“You can’t point out an individual for the team’s success all the players did a great job on the day.”

Faas said the team’s main objective was to avoid the relegation zone.

“Since we are still new to this league, for us, this season is all about learning, adapting and gaining as much experience as we can to better ourselves.

“The ladies are now growing bit by bit and game by game they are learning because this is a year for learning.

“Come next year we will know how to deal with certain teams in the league.”

Meanwhile, league contenders City Lads bounced back from their 2-1 defeat to Thunderbirds to beat Red Roses Ladies 1-0.

The New Brighton side are now trailing log-leaders Thunderbirds, who are on 40 points, by a point.

Golden Stars’ 3-3 draw against Executive Ladies saw the Port Elizabeth team maintain their unbeaten streak of three matches in the league.

Even so, Stars are 12th on the log with 14 points from 13 games.

The team has not been consistent this season, having recorded seven defeats, two draws and four victories.

Uitenhage side Manchester Babes have dropped to the bottom end of the log after losing 4-0 to Eastern Rangers, while eighth-placed Sophakama Ladies played to a 1-1 draw against Birmingham City.
