Rovers move up as Hotspurs slip

A slip by Hotspurs at the weekend has put Fairview Rovers in prime position as they moved to within a point of the top of the Northern Areas Football Association premier league table on Sunday.

Rovers put seven goals without reply past a demoralised Blackpool side, taking them to within a whisker of pole position after logleaders Spurs went down 2-1 to Bloom Callies later in the day.

Head coach Leon “CB19” McQueenie was elated with his team’s performance.

He hoped they would maintain their run of good results.

“The boys are starting to reap the rewards of all their hard work on the training ground,” McQueenie said.

He made special mention of Waven Williams, who netted a hat-trick, Diyalin Meyer (two goals) and Jose Plaatjies and Keenan Sammary (one each).

“A lot of my emphasis in training has been placed on goal-scoring.

“I think it all came to the fore this week.

“The score might look flattering, but it was not an easy match.

“Blackpool created a few chances as well, but I must commend our defence on a job well done,” McQueenie said.

Elsewhere, West Lake suffered a 2-0 defeat to Fairdene, which further dented their title hopes.

Both the Helenvale-Stardrift and Wolves-Park United matches ended in draws, with the first finishing 2-2 and the second producing eight goals.

It will be everything to play for this week as clubs head into another weekend which will see Ramblers, Rangers, Rovers, Shamrocks, Saints and Wolves in action as they replay matches postponed earlier in the season.

At the foot of the table, Saints were handed a lifeline after they overcame a resilient Ramblers outfit 3-2.

The win, which earned them a vital three points, sees them move to 12 points, just three adrift of Rangers, who suffered a 6-1 mauling at the hands of Celtic.

The win sees Celtic move to 17 points, two points ahead of Rangers, and a further five behind Shamrocks.
