School sides looking for redemption in final game

- Neale Emslie

Stung by a mauling from Grey College, the Grey High team will be looking to finish their rugby season on a high note when they face Selborne in East London on Thursday.

Both Eastern Cape schools conceded in excess of 60 points in their matches against the Bloem powerhouse this year – Grey 63-8, Selborne 62-22 – and they will be looking for some redemption in their season’s finale.

Selborne are coming off two thumping wins against Queen’s and Dale, but have five players in the SA Schools squad who begin their international series this weekend and their arch-rivals will put their reserve strength under scrutiny.

Due to the long weekend, most schools matches will be played on Wednesday and Thursday, with St Andrew’s making the trip to Cape Town for their annual clash against Bishops.

This is one of South Africa’s longest-running schools rivalries, having been first played in 1896.

It is a clash which perfectly encapsulates both teams’ eagerness to run the ball and this should be another entertaining showdown.

Bishops are on a four-match winning streak, but St Andrew’s have an outfit this year capable of ending that trend.

On Wednesday, Framesby will be favourites to regain their winning touch when they host Otto du Plessis.

After three tough games in a row, the home side should be too strong for their Algoa Park rivals.

In Uitenhage, Daniel Pienaar are set for an interesting clash with Mossel Bay outfit Punt, while Westering will be looking to bury memories of Saturday’s loss to Woodridge when they host Cillie.
