Two people including a teenage girl were killed and a third seriously injured in a head-on collision on the N2 at Nanaga outside Port Elizabeth on Sunday night.

Sinayolo Qweleni, 15, was killed and her mother, Ntombifuthi, injured when a courier truck driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle and swerved into oncoming traffic before overturning on the N2.

The driver of the VW Polo in which mother and daughter were travelling, Norman Mntuyedwa, 67, was also killed in the crash.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said the courier truck was heading towards Makhanda (Grahamstown), while Mntuyedwa was travelling towards the Bay.

Three other vehicles were also damaged in the crash.

“According to witnesses, the truck [apparently] veered into oncoming traffic, hitting the Polo,” Beetge said.

“The other three vehicles also crashed after swerving.

“The occupants of the other cars sustained minor injuries.” Beetge said Mntuyedwa and the Qwelenis were related.

“The mother is in Livingstone Hospital and detectives are still waiting to talk to her.”

Beetge said a double case of culpable homicide was under investigation.

The courier truck driver was also taken to hospital.

The docket will be sent to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision.
