Collegiate lift game in Bloem

-

Collegiate High finished fifth in their second FNB Private Wealth Super 12 hockey tournament in Bloemfontein at the weekend.

This was an improvement over last year, when they ended eighth.

Collegiate opened their programme against Paarl Gymnasium, dominating the first half to lead 1-0 at the break from a goal by Shelby Sofianos.

They found it a lot tougher to break down Paarl’s midfield in the second half, but were resilient in defence. A Paarl goal with eight seconds left meant the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The PE girls again dominated possession in their next match, against St Stithians, but missed several scoring chances before securing a 1-0 win.

They added a second win, also 1-0, against St Mary’s.

The game against Menlo Park was halted by lightning and a torrential downpour.

When it continued the next day, Menlo Park won 4-1.

Collegiate and Oranje then clashed for the fourth time this year, Oranje winning 2-0.

Collegiate and Clarendon High went to a shootout. Collegiate’s Lara Grant saved the sixth attempt.

Up against Paarl Gym for fifth place, Collegiate held their nerve for a 1-0 win after a goal by Caitlin van Goeverden.

Collegiate U16A finished sixth in the U16 Top 12 tournament, hosted by Paarl Gym.

Jayde Stubbs and Chelsey Cooke were selected for the tournament team.

The U14As were fifth in the DSG tournament in Grahamstown. They lost only one game but drew too many matches.
