PE side burn up the field against Brandwag

-

Pearson produced a sterling girls’ hockey performance to beat the visiting Brandwag High School 7-0 on Saturday.

The home side went on the attack from the start of the match and pinned the visitors to their own quarter, mostly in the circle.

Against the overwhelming onslaught, Brandwag’s defence initially held relatively well, but it became harder and harder to stem the tide.

They battled through one penalty corner after another.

At the break, the visitors were 3-0 down and Pearson had a tight grip on the game.

It was Pearson captain Megan Snyman who scored her side’s first goal with an unbeatable shot from a short corner.

Snyman led from the front throughout the match.

She often found her way through the midfield to the centre of the circle and had little mercy for the goalkeeper.

With her teammates in support, Pearson were deadly on the rebound and lifted the ball into the goalbox a number of times.

In the second half, Pearson’s polished play produced another four goals.

The home team had very little to do on defence and never looked threatened.

After the match, Pearson head coach Jeanette Makkie called the team her young stars because a significant number of the players are as young as grades 9 and 10.

She said the season had been very successful and that she was looking forward to next year with her young team. ● The clash between Pearson and Brandwag’s first netball sides developed into a closely contested game at Pearson.

Brandwag took an early 9-4 lead with excellent play in the first quarter, but Pearson delivered a remarkable comeback to edge 12-11 ahead.

In the third quarter, the score came close to level again before Pearson extended their lead to 20-17.

The home side started the last quarter strongly and extended the lead to six goals but then seemed to slow down.

Brandwag fought back, wiping three goals off the lead.

However, Pearson hung on for a 26-23 victory.
