With just four days to go before entries close for The Herald Matric of the Year competitio­n, the region’s top matrics are running out of time to stake their claim to the more than R120,000 worth of prizes.

Petrol, cash, books and even a gym subscripti­on are waiting to be claimed, with a host of sponsors throwing their weight behind the Eastern and Southern Cape’s most prestigiou­s accolade for matriculan­ts.

A total of R50,000 from Spec-Savers SA will be shared between The Herald Matric of the Year and the Excellence Award winner.

Prize winners will also share fuel vouchers worth R10,000 from Caltex.

Caltex Eastern Cape Marketer’s regional sales manager, Craig Herman, said the company was honoured to be aligned with the event.

“Competitio­n for places in further education and jobs is fierce ... and we believe that pupils who have a strong sense of self-worth and empowermen­t will be best prepared,” Herman said.

“The experience of entering, as well as winning an award, will demonstrat­e the result of hard work, competitiv­e spirit, teamwork and ambition.”

Other prizes include one 12month, five three-month and 20 two-month membership­s and one spa voucher – worth R23,558 – from Profiles Gym.

Proline computers is providing four Proline 7-inch LTE tablets worth R5,596.

Van Schaik Book Store has contribute­d 20 dictionary and stationery packs and vouchers to the value of R5,850.

Vodacom will give two Samsung Galaxy Tablet A 10.1 Note Edition, each with a 1GB data bundle, worth R12,296.

The event organisers will fund two 12-month, five sixmonth and 20 digital subscripti­ons and 26 framed certificat­es, all worth R13,934.

Entries can be posted or delivered to Matric of the Year Awards, Newspaper House, 19 Baakens Street, Central, PE, attention of Berna Ulay Walters.

Entries can also be dropped off at Spec-Savers stores in Uitenhage, Walmer Park, Cleary Park, Korsten and Sunridge Village, and at East London’s Vincent Park and Beacon Bay shopping centres.

The top 20 finalists will be announced on September 10.
