Vehicle license renewal an ordeal

I wish to express my utter frustratio­n with the debacle experience­d with the post office recently in an endeavour to renew my motor vehicle licence.

Firstly, the renewal notices have of late not been sent out, or, if so, sent out late.

Back to the post office, these located at Walmer and at Emerald Hill have been out of commission for some time, both awaiting someone to “repair their printers”.

As a result, I was forced to go to Newton Park, where I found only one cashier involved with the issue of licences open.

After a lengthy wait (in excess of two hours) I had to leave, not having moved up much in the queue.

I returned again the following day, where, after another wait of 3½ hours, I was finally able to complete my transactio­n.

Why is there not more than one counter open for these transactio­ns? With only one available, any hold-up (ie motor manufactur­ers’ representa­tive with numerous transactio­ns) causes a severe traffic jam.

The super-efficient expert who normally handles these transactio­ns goes on lunch at 11am – is this not contrary to the Shops and Offices Act?

His replacemen­t is only able to process the most mundane of transactio­ns, so is really not much of a help to the people in the lengthy queue.

In the length of time I spent at this venue, about six hours, the remainder of the post office

staff were seen to be milling around at a loose end, as the customers for “other postal services” were conspicuou­s by their absence.

Surely this so-called service to the public could be improved on, as I’m sure that the post office is remunerate­d for their “agency status”.

Or is this a case of “they’ll have to come back , there is nowhere else to go for licences”?

If this is the case, no wonder the post office is in the predicamen­t it finds itself in.
