Wells Estate residents braved the chilly and wet weather to express their plight during Thursday night’s Integrated Development Plan ( IDP) meeting held at a local community hall in the area.

Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Mongameli Bobani and his executives took notes while Ward 60 residents raised issues such as the alarming crime rate, unemployment, and the shortage of housing, clinics and high schools.

Bobani was accompanied by his deputy, Thsonono Buyeye, infrastructure and engineering head Andile Lungisa, human settlements head Andile Mfunda, Makhi Feni of corporate services and Ward 60 councillor Mvuzo Mbelekane.

Resident Mandisa Masiki told the officials she had almost cried with happiness when the new administration was announced

“The level of crime is very high here in Wells Estate,” she said. “Yesterday a girl was shot.

“The police station is too far and we urge you to at least put a satellite station here.

“We also have no high school and kids have to be ferried to other areas,” she said.

Rachael Mgedezi said: “Those projects that were taken away by the previous administration must come back. We live below [the] bread line.”

Bobani told residents: “Bobani is in the office. Tell Athol Trollip we have kicked him out of the office as mayor.

“You have been living in the margin long enough.

“We are closing the gap. “When they tell me there is a drain that needs to be fixed in town, I will tell them let us first fix the one in Wells Estate.”
