Do not travel in an unsafe vehicle

-

The heritage weekend is almost upon us – but the concern is that many motorists’ vehicles are not travel-ready.

Every year, the number of accidents and fatalities on SA’s roads over long weekends is alarming.

“Vehicles that have not been serviced and are not roadworthy make taking long road trips a hazard.

“A tyre blow-out, for example, can result in pieces of rubber flying up onto the road, hitting other vehicles and causing accidents as drivers swerve to avoid the debris,” Motor Industry Workshop Association (Miwa) chairperson Dewald Ranft said.

Vehicle owners planning a trip for the long weekend must get their vehicles checked and serviced now, he said.

“Leaving it until a day or two before departure is not a good idea.

“What motorists don’t realise is that, should maintenance be needed on their vehicle and spare parts are not in stock, these need to be ordered.

“This could take several days, if they are available at all.

“It is risky leaving things to the last minute and it could put a real dampener on holiday plans,” Ranft said.

During a service, mechanics will do a thorough check of the vehicle, which will include a road test and an assessment of crucial parts.

“If a problem is identified the mechanic will advise you and provide a quote for repairs needed. It is best to use an accredited workshop,” he said.

“Don’t wait. Get your vehicle in tip top condition now.”
