Crime incidences in SA in the realm of war zone proportions

- Name supplied Lorraine, Port Elizabeth

I had to pinch myself and check with my wife whether I had heard the response by some government departments, this after the war-like crime stats were announced.

When in doubt try to regulate people from protecting themselves by making it harder to get a legal firearm and then – can you believe it? – regulate people’s access to knives.

A motivated criminal will illegally obtain a firearm easier than a law-abiding citizen can legally apply for a licence to own a firearm.

A motivated criminal does not need to buy a knife.

He can make one or steal one.

I applaud our strict firearm policy where responsible firearm ownership is made a priority.

To get perspective on this issue, I know of a few cases where legally licensed firearm owners have gone out and robbed people or murdered people as part of a robbery.

Surely it cannot be there are an average of 57 murders per day.

SAPS must have more police officers appointed and pay them more.

Their jobs are dangerous and they work under challenging conditions.

Appoint more reservists to assist SAPS and traffic officers.

Institute a drive to recruit reservists from neighbourhood watches where people have an interest in serving their communities and reducing crime.

Embrace the reservist system and acknowledge the free hours people are willing to give to reduce crime.

How can I cut my steak with no knife?
