Duo to share some velvety sounds
The PE Opera House’s popular Jazz’Afro Sundays programme resumed last Sunday and this weekend will see local musicians Winston Peterson and Linda Tsoana sharing the stage at the Barn.
The show is at 5pm on Sunday and tickets are R70 (R50 for pensioners).
However, because the Barn is such an intimate venue, it means seating is limited, so it is best to arrive early.
Peterson is especially known among jazz lovers in the Bay’s northern areas and in the jazz hub of New Brighton.
The self-taught saxophonist began his musical journey with the banjo, but soon fell in love with the alto saxophone.
During the late 1960s, he joined his hometown friend, drummer Gilbert Matthews, and keyboard player Mervin Africa from Cape Town, in a successful trio.
In the early 1970s, after his two friends left to pursue their musical ambitions in Sweden, Peterson came to PE.
Here he built up a flourishing career and met the likes of the legendary Dudley Tito and the popular Soul Jazzmen outfit.
Through his job as a sales rep for Music Land, he was also able to share his passion for music far and wide.
Peterson’s own band, Maiden Voyage, spans more than four decades and has been involved in bringing numerous fine acts to the Bay.
Today “Uncle Winston”, as he is fondly known, spends much of his time surrounded by musical instruments at the Westbourne Road shop, where he continues to inspire many musicians.
Tsoana, who grew up in New Brighton’s Avenue A, was also nurtured by her musical hero, Tito.
She is known for her moving, velvety voice and engaging stage presence, possessing both confidence and innocence.
She spent much of her youth listening to and observing the music legends of New Brighton, who had a great influence on her sound and ear for a great tune.
Tsoana is known for giving US jazz standards her own unique spin.
