Sparkling lineup buffed for annual Heritage Tour

-

The Southern Cape Old Car Club’s annual Heritage Tour will visit the West Coast this time, with 51 participants in 27 vehicles set to take part from September 22 to 25.

Walter and Lydia Fivaz, of Hartenbos, are coming along in their 1948 Hudson Pacemaker Coupe, manufactured by the Hudson Motor Company in Detroit in the US, for the first time.

They bought the vehicle from a restaurateur in Keurboomstrand five years ago.

“It is unique as it is the only one in the country.

“The elegant style and impressive chrome grille are very special,” Lydia said.

George Marx, of Tergniet in Mossel Bay, will be participating for the seventh time and will again be driving his twodoor 1957 Morris Minor 1000.

“I experienced no problems with the vehicle during the past six trips,” said Marx, who bought his classy ride from a friend eight years ago.

“He had been restoring it for seven years but fortunately the work was almost done, leaving little for me to complete.”

The two-door has more leg space than the four-door, and he should know, as he also owns a four-door 1959 model in which he will undertake a six-day tour in September.

Chris and Nelie van Staden, of Great Brak River, are also participating for the seventh time in their “very temperamental” 1968 Porche 912 Targa.

“After retiring, I was looking for a plaything and fortunately found the Porche. It seems expensive and attracts a lot of attention, but it is not really that expensive!” Chris said.

Fourth-time participants Rohann and Marlise Steenekamp, of George, will be touring in their 1952 Chevy bakkie. “I bought the bakkie from the Esterhuizens of Joubertina, who had a garage shop at Misgund for many years.

“The bakkie was used to transport goods from town and the station until about 1980.

“Now that it is restored it is such a joy to sit upright behind the large steering wheel and travel through our beautiful country,” Rohann said.

Jan du Randt and Jani Klomp of Storms River are participating in his 1962 Consul Capri 315.

“I had been searching for such a vehicle for years and at last found it this year,” Jan said.

Jan and Jani participated in the Heritage Tour in a 1959 Ford Zodiac in 2015, a 1961 Vauxhall Velox in 1961 and a 1977 Mercedes 500 LC in 2017. ● Contact Pierre Olivier, chair of the organising committee, at 082-872-6456 for more information.
