Kings ‘need more vigour in attack’
More verve and vigour is needed from a static Isuzu Southern Kings attack if they want to blast holes in the Glasgow Warriors’ defence on Saturday, Kings head coach Deon Davids said.
After going down 28-7 to Ulster on Sunday, the Kings face a tough clash against the Warriors who whipped the Cheetahs 52-24 in their last outing in Bloemfontein.
The Kings, who will be attempting to end a threematch losing streak, will face Glasgow at the Madibaz Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
The venue change was made because extra preparation time is required for the Rugby Championship game between SA and Australia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on September 29.
“I felt that defensively we were sound, but on attack against Ulster we were a bit static,” Davids said.
“We did not play towards our policy of run-catch so that we could gain on the advantage line in building pressure.
“At times when we shifted the ball to wide channels, we got impatient. We did not hold onto the ball longer, but we kicked it away.
“I don’t know if it was because the Kings did not see much ball.
“The team looked for quick fixes and results when they had the ball. Maybe that caused us to rush things and make wrong decisions.”
The Kings were outscored by three tries to one against Ulster, who produced a strong second-half showing.
Davids praised the defensive effort of his team. “I think in the first half we did not see a lot of the ball.
“Defensively, there were some good efforts from the players to keep Ulster out.
“We were able to create a few opportunities for ourselves towards the end of the first half.
“The Kings knew in the second half that if we wanted to get a good result we would have to keep our hands on the ball.
“At times, we were just too eager. When we got opportunities we did not settle within our system.
“At times we made the wrong decision and we went the wrong way and did not see the space that was offered to us,” he said.
“So that is something we will have to discuss with our drivers.”
The Warriors will arrive in Port Elizabeth defending a 100% record after winning all three of their opening matches.
