‘Vat Hom, Flaffie’ at the Little Theatre

● Comedy hopes to bring guffaws to young, old

- Herald Reporter

Port Elizabeth’s Afrikaans amateur theatre group ATKV-Peaat presents the comedy Vat Hom, Flaffie at the Little Theatre in Athol Fugard (formerly Belmont) Terrace in Central this week.

Vat Hom, Flaffie –loosely translated as Catch Him Fluffy! – is by Pieter Fourie and will be performed at 7.30pm under the direction of Peaat president Emercia de Lange.

Her versatile cast of experienced actors and newcomers to the stage are hoping to bring giggles and guffaws to young and old, with much of the comedy centred on the character of retired farmer Hups.

The story centres around his visit to the spa, recommended by his doctor to try getting his unhealthy appetite under control.

His friend Yster wants to go along for the fun, together with Yster’s secretary Cindy, his business partner Tollie and Jannie the office clerk with “snake hips”. When his wife Hendrina and Yster’s wife Ella also end up at the spa, that’s when the troubles start, with farcical results.

“I so enjoyed being involved with this project, although the stress levels were high,” De Lange, who also plays Hendrina in Vat Hom Flaffie, said.

She said the comedy was different to the shows normally presented by ATKV-Peaat and the main characters carried the piece, singling out Jannie, played by Menno Mostert, as one of the biggest sources of laughter.

The cast includes Riël Marais (Hups), Emercia de Lange, Mariné Botha (Ella), Louise Stow (Cindy), Henrico Jordaan (Tollie), Anke Staphorst (waitress), Yster (Ferreira Stumke) and Anton Steyn and Hugo Wium (bar man and masseuse).

● Tickets are R90, on sale at Westway Cafe in Cape Road.
