Women treated differently

- Derrick Fellows Port Alfred

John Finlayson correctly points out the flaws in the process which Brett Kavanaugh is at present undergoing before the US Senate (“Be fair in coverage of judge”, October 1).

Kavanaugh's great failing in the eyes of the Democrats and the liberal section of the US press is that he is a conservative and for that reason is deemed unsuitable to sit on the bench of the US Supreme Court.

Of course, this is nothing new.

Clarence Thomas had similar charges levelled against him by Anita Hill decades after the alleged offence, when he was nominated for the US Supreme Court.

He too is a conservative and he too was damned as a sexual predator.

In this regard it is interesting to compare the treatment accorded Hill and Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Ford, to former president Bill Clinton's accuser, Paula Jones.

While Hill and Ford are given unquestioning support by the liberal press, Jones, who did not wait decades before accusing Clinton, was denigrated, pilloried and vilified as trailer park trash by the supposedly liberal press.

Even Hillary Clinton dismissed the charges as a rightwing conspiracy, but then Bill Clinton was a liberal and could do no wrong.

This despite the fact that, as we now know, he lied under oath, paid Jones damages and was indeed the sexual predator Jones said he was.

Well, as Walter Kirn is reported to have said, “Everyone loves a witch-hunt as long as it’s someone else’s witch being hunted”.
