US pianist and virtuoso cellist set for Bay
The Port Elizabeth Music Society has invited cellist Peter Martens and pianist Bryan Wallick to a recital on Wednesday, October 17, in the NMU South Campus Auditorium.
PE Music Society president Dr Erika Bothma said she was excited about the concert, which would start at 7.30pm.
“I tried to include Peter Martens in our series for quite some time, and to hear him partnered by Dr Bryan Wallick will be very special,” she said.
They will play these works: ● Bach’s Solo Cello Suite No 3 in C Major, BWV 1009;
● Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No 3 in A major, Op 69;
● Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata Op 19 in G Minor.
Martens studied with Dalena Roux at Stellenbosch University, Heidi Litchauer, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and has a master’s degree from UCT. In 1993, he returned to SA and occupied principal positions in the New Arts Philharmonic and Cape Philharmonic before moving to the University of Stellenbosch, where he currently holds the positions of director of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival and artistic administrator of the department of music.
Wallick is gaining recognition as one of the great American virtuoso pianists of his generation. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and South Africa.
Tickets are R35 to R95.
