Fairview hot to trot

Horse racing enthusiast­s in the Bay are in for an extravagan­za of note at the Fairview Racecourse this weekend when the R350,000 Listed Algoa Cup is set to attract the attention of SA’s top stables.

The three-day event starts off with the Eastern Cape Horse Care Unit Charity Race Day on Friday, in aid of the charity that sees to the needs of horses and donkeys in the Bay’s townships, as well as in Humansdorp and Makhanda.

The Racing Associatio­n will hold a cocktail party and auction after the last race.

Saturday has been set aside as a family day where, for R130 a car, families can enjoy the sunset next to the track while the police Mounted Unit will give a demonstrat­ion.

Pony rides for the smaller members of the family will also be available.

At 7pm the movie Seabiscuit will be screened, with patrons able to bring picnic baskets.

Snacks and drinks will be on sale.

The main race, to be run over 2,000m, will take place on Sunday. Cape Town trainers Justin Snaith, Candice BassRobins­on, Glen Kotzen and Dan Katz have all entered horses for Port Elizabeth’s big race.

Gauteng trainer Sean Tarry also has a runner.

There are 30 entries for the race, which has been dominated by the Cape Town visitors in recent years.
