Amazon King to kick off Pick 6

- Herald Racing Editor

AFTER the excitement of last weekend’s double header, it is back to bread-and-butter racing at the Fairview Polytrack tomorrow.

The main event of the day is Race 3, a MR 82 Handicap over 1 300m. Seven runners go to post, with Gavin Smith-trained Amazon King and Sharon Kotzen charge Counting Stars looking the pick.

Amazon King flew up late when winning his last race over 1 200m. Muzi Yeni was in the irons that day and he retains the ride and will jump from pole position.

The son of Kahal is consistent and will be hard to beat.

Counting Stars, with Ryan Munger up, is a five-time winner and once clocked up four victories in a row.

In his last race, Counting Stars was not at his best which led to a riding inquiry. He is a much better horse than that performance suggests and should give Amazon King a run for his money.

Alan Greeff-trained Lord Windermere can never be underestimated and deserves respect with Greg Cheyne in the saddle. He ran on late in his last race over 1 200m and tomorrow’s extra 100m might be what he needs to secure a fourth career win.

At their best, Prince Of Orange, Scribo and Captain Marooned can all win a race like this.

Race 3 is also the first leg of the Pick 6.

The second leg seems to be a three-horse race between Jika, Burnt Rock and High Definition. All three came very close in their last starts – all finishing second.

Race 7, the second-last leg of the Pick 6, looks tricky with several runners eyeing the winner’s cheque.

Belonje, Rebel Baron, Titus and Strong ’n Brave seem to be the top contenders, but don’t overlook Seattle Spell, The Goon Show, American Captain and Tubular Bell. Go wide or go out.

The first race is off at 13:00 with a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1 200m and Greeff-trained Piazza Del Campo can get punters off to a winning start.
