Cop in court over police station robbery

- Gareth Wilson

A police constable has been arrested after she was allegedly implicated in a robbery at the Kareedouw police station earlier in 2018.

Constable Yandiswa Siyasanga Feni, 30, appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

She will appear in court again for a bail application on November 21.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Anelisa Feni said Feni was arrested by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit on Monday.

“Investigations have so far linked the officer to the conspiracy behind the robbery where four armed men reportedly entered and robbed the police station of firearms and ammunition during the early hours of August 4,” she said,

“The suspects allegedly threatened and disarmed the constable [Feni] who was at the client service centre before they opened the safe and made off with two R5 rifles, four handguns, a police radio and ammunition.”

This was the third police station to be attacked – and have firearms stolen – in the province in 18 months.

In February, the Ngcobo police station was attacked.

The robbers took six pistols, two shotguns and two assault rifles.

Five officers and a bystander, a soldier, were killed.

In March 2017, 30 guns were stolen from the Peddie police station in a burglary.

In October 2017, seven state firearms were stolen when thieves broke into the Eastern Cape provincial traffic department offices in Grahamstown.

Three weeks later, six firearms were stolen from the Sundays River Valley municipality traffic department in Kirkwood during a burglary.
