PUPILS BULLIED AT BAY SCHOOL

“Violent bullying at Malabar school” (November 15): teachers are doing their best, but kids come out of ill-disciplined homes where no respect is taught. Also in the northern areas there are more than 40 pupils per class.

TEACHER Principal Crispin Abrahams stated, “There are procedures for incidents – they are reported to the department of education.” And then what? You wait. Everyone waits! It is a well-known fact that since 1994, the department has failed to respond/deliver.

Sir! May I suggest you get off your backside and take regular walkabouts before lessons, during breaks and even after lessons. Be seen. Let them know who is in charge. Stop passing the buck.

RICHARD, CHARLO, PORT ELIZABETH

CONCERNS ABOUT TAXI

This taxi, pictured above, broke down in Crane Road, Walmer in the middle of the road, holding up traffic for almost 15 minutes. Eventually the driver got out and pushed it to where the photo was taken as he could not get it going.

It is serious that this vehicle, with no number plates and no licence disc to be found, is operating on the road transporting people every day. Are there no traffic cops in PE who actually do any work?

GOOD SERVICE

Absolutely kind and friendly service from Marcia at the traffic department in Uitenhage. You made my day. DES U A big thank you to Mrs D Molatsi for her kind and efficient service at the licensing department in Korsten.

COUNCILLOR PUZZLE

When is Andile Lungisa going to be disqualified as a councillor due to his being found guilty of assault?

SANDY Andile Lungisa will remain a councillor while he is appealing against his assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm conviction and sentence in the Eastern Cape High Court. – The editor

Andile Lungisa is getting photographic coverage far too often. Why your love affair with this violent, erratic councillor? PW

HEARTBROKEN BY COMMENTS

I am heartbroken to see The Herald readers making excuses for the devastating dog attack on Gerald Cloete and his extremely brave rescuer! Some of the comments clearly expose the fact that many people see Cloete as somehow less important than a dog!

Wake up people. Imagine if it was your child who lost an arm and nearly her life, and was saved only by an extremely valiant good Samaritan! MARION

DON’T NEED OTHER JOBS

Ismail Lagardien (“Who’ll employ capture culprits?”, November 13): answer – they stole enough, so don’t need other jobs.

LET COUNCILLORS HELP

“WhatsApp part of plan to protect Bay staff” (November 14): the DA asked where the money would come from. After reading this article, here is my suggestion. Seeing that each councillor is very handsomely awarded a salary for the bad job they are all doing, irrespective of which party they belong to, I have a very good suggestion.

Every councillor donates a measly 5% of his or her salary to his or her ward. This can be used for the specific benefit that it brings to the people who voted them in.

DISGRACEFUL CONDITIONS

“The elderly should not live like this” (November 14): what a disgrace that old people have to live under such conditions. Shame on the municipality. Shame on all the political parties. How heartless can you be?

The private sector and service organisations are always expected to bail out municipalities, provincial governments and national government while these very same governance structures are looting available funds. Shame on all of you for subjecting the vulnerable senior citizens to such inhumane, degrading conditions!

ANNE CROASDALE Just want to have my say regarding the filthy conditions these elderly people are living in. Would you like to change places with one of them? Mayor Danny Jordaan at the time vowed to allocate R24m over three years to revamp the facilities.

Security took a handful, being R10.5m. The balance is where? Was a distribution of this money recorded? If so, where? It looks as if people are living in horrible conditions and no one cares. Then you want to spend money on stupid name changes. Get your priorities right. READER

REPLIES TO READERS’ COMMENTS

Could not agree more with Gary about the ridiculous taxi situation outside the Boardwalk (“No action against taxis”, November 14). It’s a great opportunity for corrupt traffic officers to make lots of cash on spot fines as taxi drivers have lots of cash, but they don’t realise this. This would probably solve the problem. Call it cash for keys, no cash no keys.

OBSERVER Shame Lambert Mostert (“Response lacking”, November 14). You want a pat on the back? I also donated until about seven years ago due to medical problem. I really wish I could have continued. It would have been about 250 units now. By the way your name may also appear on the board. Be grateful that you can still donate. CHEETAH
