Cradock retain Top Guns title

- Neale Emslie

The Cradock Tennis Club retained their title in the second edition of the Growthpoint Top Guns club tennis championships at PE Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday.

This means the Karoo outfit have qualified again to play in the national finals, which will take place in February.

They came up against Sunridge Park in the final and quickly established a lead when Ricky and Robbie de Klerk took the doubles clash over Craig White and Ashley Hobson 4-1 4-0.

This was followed by the mixed doubles encounter, in which Ricky de Klerk and Nandi Norval were level in sets against White and Megan Kempson (4-0 1-4), but went on to win the match tiebreaker convincingly 10-0.

Since they had secured the title after two matches, the women’s doubles match was not played.

The fourth member of the Cradock team was Carin Janse van Rensburg. The Pop Guns section, with its emphasis on having fun, was won by the Wembley team of Leslie Young, Rocco Prinsloo, Paula Murray and Heather Barnes-Webb.

A total of 10 entries were received overall, six in the top Top Guns category and four in the Pop Guns division.

Cradock, with 13 points, and Sunridge Park (16 points), were unbeaten in the roundrobin stage, thus qualifying for the final.

Tennis Nelson Mandela Bay president Mike Bladen was delighted with the successful organisation of the day.

“The order of play was welltimed, with the tournament concluding within the anticipated time,” he said.

“We commend Dave Emslie for planning the tournament flow extremely well, resulting in a successful outcome.

“TNMB also thanks Ridwhaan Dawood and Ephraim Motsiane for the outstanding support on behalf of Tennis SA,” he said.

“[Our thanks also to] Growthpoint Properties for their substantial sponsorship of this championship.

“It grants our clubs a fantastic platform to showcase their top players.”
