George revved up for town’s Old Car Show
The 23rd George Old Car Show, to be held on February 9 and 10, was launched at the Protea Hotel by Marriott King George in November.
Oakhurst Insurance Company is sponsoring the show for the third year and George Municipality also confirmed their continued support.
“George mayor Melvin Naik believes the show is making a major contribution to the city of George and therefore pledged a much larger donation,” media spokesperson for the Southern Cape Old Car Club committee, Japie Beyers, said.
Beyers said the focus in the main arena would be on rare and exotic cars, such as Dr Waldo Scribante’s 1971 Porsche 914, of which only seven were manufactured.
“We want to focus on rare collectors’ items which are not readily available to everybody. “We believe these cars will lend special status to the George Old Car Show,” he added.
The Veteran Tour will take place on the eve of the show on February 8.
“The Veteran Tour, supported by Airoclassics, will depart from Klaarstroom on Friday morning,” tour organiser Philip Kuschke said. “We expect some 20 cars. Two or three of these will be single cylinder cars manufactured before 1905 and will fit in nicely with the focus on rare and exclusive cars.”
Only vehicles manufactured before 1975 may be exhibited and advance registration for the event is required.
The 2019 event will be the last to take place at the PW Botha College in York Street.
The first show was presented on Paul Fick’s farm, Blackwood, near Victoria Bay in 1997. The next year the show moved to the George Riding Club in Glenwood Road, but it too became too small and so it moved to the PW Botha College in 2001.
“The venue has once again become too small to accommodate visitors’ parking,” Beyers said.
“Therefore the show will move back to Glenwood Road in 2020, but this time the main show will be held on the premises of Glenwood House School. “
