Rock ‘n roll show revived
● ‘Sticky Fingers’ is on Sunday at Old Grey sports club
Last week Centrestage reincarnated the rock spectacle of Freddy Mercury and the sounds of Queen, and this weekend continue the theme with a tribute to Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones at Old Grey sports club in Glendinningvale.
Veteran rock singer Duck Chowles flies in from Cape Town to front Port Elizabeth’s Centrestage band as the flamboyant Jagger in the show Sticky Fingers on Sunday evening at 7pm.
Barnyard Theatre entrepreneur and show producer Chowles will perform gems such as Gimme Shelter, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Angie, Ruby Tuesday, Miss You, It’s Only Rock n Roll (But I Like It), Time is On My Side, Get Off My Cloud, Sympathy for the Devil, Brown Sugar and Paint it Black, Satisfaction, Start Me Up and Jumping Jack Flash. Two PE members of the original Sticky Fingers lineup will accompany him for the show – Gino Fabbri will reprise his role as Charlie Watts on drums, and Joe van der Linden will play the rock n roll pirate and guitarist Keith Richards.
They are joined by Sherid van Rooyen on second guitar in the guise of Ronnie Wood, Andrew Warneke playing the role of Bill Wyman on bass and Boet Strydom on keyboards.
“I listen to the Stones every day of my life,” long-time aficionado Chowles says.
“We will concentrate on their pre-1980s repertoire, when they were still a band, before they became a brand.”
The relationship between Chowles, Centrestage owner Gary Hemmings and comedian-cum-drummer Fabbri spans two and a half decades since Sticky Fingers was first performed.
“This show is a labour of love for us all – an opportunity for old muso friends to get together to play the real rock ‘n roll music,” Fabbri said.
“Sadly, as the face of today’s music changes, the chances for us to play this kind of music are diminishing, which makes this show very special to us. There’s nothing like it!”
