CASUAL WORKERS NOT PAID

Strange that our municipality has money to spend on a summer festival, but for the past eight months this very same municipality couldn’t or didn’t want to pay the casuals at Gail Road depot, Gelvandale. These officials [allegedly] lie, and to think this happened on the DA watch and not even the DA was willing to assist these guys. Poor souls are facing a bleak festive seasons while the corrupt ones will enjoy theirs. CONCERNED

COUNCILLORS SHOULD BE ASHAMED

I am once again appealing to you to bring the dire straits of the animal pound up again. We are donating our Christmas presents’ value to [the SPCA]. The councillors should one and all be ashamed of themselves over this matter irrespective of who they represent. Please can the business community of our city help a little as well? REGULAR WRITER’S DEATH

CAN’T GET PAYMENT

Emergency! Find someone at human settlement to pay the money it owes us. They don’t answer phones after 3pm.

OVERTAKES ON THE LEFT

A taxi overtook me on my left where I was standing at a robot in Circular Drive, riding on the pavement, and stopped right in front of me for two seconds. It drove off with the red light still on – no concern for a red traffic light and oncoming traffic. MOTORIST

ARMED GROUPS CAN DISPLAY FLAGS

So the old flag is now hate speech, yet armed wings such as Apla and uMkhonto weSizwe can proudly display their flags and badges which are hurtful and dehumanising to the many families and friends of those who they murdered by planting bombs in restaurants, and throwing hand grenades and firing automatic weapons in churches.

GREAT CARTOON!

How true is Mark Wiggett’s cartoon in Wednesday’s morning paper. OBSERVER

NOTHING FROM RATEPAYERS

Why quiet? Kobus Gerber, why are you silent? After mayor Mongameli Bobani took over you had a lot to say and now you are silent. Shame. THE BULL

TELLS IT LIKE IT IS

Well said, Malcolm St Leger Daines (“Should have heeded Chris Hani’s warning”, December 11). Thank you for telling as it is. It is going to be worse. I wish we can get more people like you, the Vuyo Mvokos and Thuli Mandonselas of this New Dawn. Chris Hani’s warning indeed was correct.

HUNT CRIMINALS

“We’ll hunt down criminals” (December 13): why is it that at the end of every year the metro police visibility steps up? This only lasts for three months. Do you really think that criminals are stupid and don’t read the paper? If you want to eradicate crime and everything else this has to become a norm throughout the whole year.

You can only afford 127 members and yet there are many seeking work. Crime will never go away, Mr Mayor, unless you do something about it.

CITIZEN Mongameli Bobani, you must start in your own ranks. Send the convicted ones back to jail.

L MCLEOD Mongameli Bobani's maths is a little out of kilter. He quotes, “The municipality is ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of tourists”. Um ...... not. Maybe a few thousand. GORDON UPTON

WELL DONE, CHERYL ZONDI

The brave and articulate Cheryl Zondi seems to be following in her namesake’s footsteps, the late ANC stalwart Cheryl Gilwald, with her similar attributes. The establishment of her Cheryl Zondi Foundation is not for the faint-hearted, by taking abuse as a leverage to inspire others to follow suit.

As the Mexican proverb goes, “They tried to bury us, not knowing that we are seeds.” I think it is safe to say that she has joined the women-of-substance league of captivating, assertive and respectful women like Raenette Taljaard, Phumzile Langeni, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, Natasha Mazzone, Kerishnie Naicker and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

Two thumbs up to the young woman and not forgetting that she is wise beyond her age by not judging all men based on one she trusted and who allegedly broke her trust. LUYANDA MARLON KAMA, KWADWESI, PORT ELIZABETH

WE MADE MISTAKES

Today in History of November 29 refers to “the second Anglo-Boer War 1989 (sic) 1902”. You’ve got to know The Herald readers are sharp-eyed, perceptive and, in some instances, pedantic.

DERRICK FELLOWS In November 28’s Today in History regarding the Anglo-Boer War a typo crept in – 1989 instead of 1889. Oops. CMG Thanks for publishing my letter, “Bok backline must be build on basic logic” (November 28), but why change my heading to bad English? It should be built not build!

ALF HICKS This is for the proof reader who slipped up. TV pick of the day on November 29 said the e.tv film was at 11pm. However, the e.tv schedule on the same page gave this film at 10pm.

VIEWER Oops indeed! Our apologies for the mistakes. – The editor
