J-Bay to host final road race of season

- Mogan Segadavan

The Eastern Province roadrunning season ends in Jeffreys Bay on Saturday with the Drommedaris Furnishers 10km Holiday Run.

Organised by the Kouga Multisport Club, the race carries a winner’s purse of R1,500 for men and women, with cash prizes in all categories and appliances for the lucky draw.

“Traditionally the race attracts a large number of holiday-makers who have already started arriving in the town,” race organiser Ben Joubert said.

Defending champion Mariano Eesou (Madibaz) faces stiff competition this year, with Ikhamva sending a strong fourman team headed by Melikhaya Frans and Luyanda Tshangana. Frans has been unbeaten over the shorter distances this season.

With women’s champion Ntombesintu Mfunzi not racing on Saturday, Ndelika Mvakwendlu, who finished third last year, will start as the favourite.

The race will start and end in front of Drommedaris Furnishers in Drommedaris Street.

Late entries will be accepted from 6pm-8pm on Friday at the Edge Fitness Club in Dolphin Beach, Diaz Street, and at the start from 5.15am on Saturday.

Entry fee is R60 for the 10km (R40 for EPA-registered athletes over 65) and R40 for the 5km fun run.
